Marriage Shouldn't Be Legal

This title kinda sets you on edge, doesn’t it? Well, here’s the part where you’ll prove whether you’re stupid or whether you know how to actually read an article: I mean marriage shouldn’t be legally regulated.

So many people get in uproar over same-sex marriage, as well as any marriage that doesn’t involve 2 human beings of a different gender. “It insults the sanctity of marriage!” I’ve heard great arguments… but none to top the one argument I’ve had all along. Here are some:

  • My marriage is sacred, and I don’t want to think that my marriage is in the same category as theirs. - valid point; your marriage should be special to you
  • It’s wrong and unnatural - invalid point; marriage in general is unnatural… through evolution, male human beings produced lots of sperm to increase the chance that their sperm gets to the egg before other men’s sperm does. By all “natural” logic, we should all be promiscuous whores.

Yeah, that’s all I’ve heard for arguments. “It’s just not right” and “sanctity of marriage” and all that. None of them come close to answering this argument: how is any of this your problem?

I’ve got a better idea: leave “marriage” as a strictly religious-regulated thing. You want to get married? You’ll need to join a church or some religious gathering to make it so.

This means there will be no legal connection to it whatsoever. If you want to be “legally joined”, you should instead go to the courthouse and get a “legal union”. This legal union is nothing more than a contract signed by 2 people that they will live together and share everything. This is where your tax breaks come in.

Using this paradigm, you could conceivably not get married, but get a legal union. What if you’re not religious? Why would you want a union that says “under God” or whatever if you’re an atheist? Makes no sense. A legal union is one that is religiously ambiguous, and sexually ambiguous.

You could also conceivably be married, but not legally bound. Now you could totally have multiple wives, or marry a dog, or even your computer full of porn. It’s not a legal contract of any kind, and you’re totally free to explore it. Of course, you wouldn’t be legally allowed to engage in beastiality or pedophilia, but at least you’d be married!

We can drop the bullshit “Under God” part of our pledge of allegiance already. We came to this country to get away from religious control, so why would we then create our own to control us again? It boggles the mind.

Your religion is your problem, not our government’s. That’s the way it should be.
